While the label attributes the portrait to Colonel Léopold L. Armant—the 18th Louisiana's heroic commander killed in action while leading his men at the Battle of Mansfield in 1864—facial comparison with known archival portraits indicates this image likely depicts his relative and fellow company member, John Valery Armant of Company E (Chasseurs St. Jacques), or another junior officer recruited from the wealthy sugar-plantation communities of St. James Parish.
