This volume is an antique pocket edition of Stanley J. Weyman's historical romance, “The Castle Inn”, published in London in 1911 by Smith, Elder & Co. in conjunction with Longmans, Green & Co. Designated as Volume XI in the chronological 20-volume "Thin Paper Edition of Stanley J. Weyman's Novels" (the Author's Complete Edition), this pocket-sized volume features its premium publisher's red faux-leather cloth binding over stiff boards, showcasing a distinctively tight, microscopic grid-embossed texture. The front cover showcases a central gold-embossed circular medallion displaying the intertwined "SJW" author monogram, while the spine features ornate gold-gilded flourishes, gold-leaf lettering, and a gilt top edge (TEG) to the text block. The volume anchors its publishing history with an explicit breakdown page documenting its printing path, noting this October 1911 run as the 8th Impression of the text. It features original cream endpapers and thin paper pages typical of early 20th century deluxe library pocket series, offering a beautiful example of Edwardian-era specialized book production. Adding a wonderful layer of local retail history, the upper corner of the title page bears an original, contemporary pencil notation reading "2/-", indicating that this deluxe variant originally retailed for exactly two shillings under the pre-decimal British currency system. The layout of the title page features the iconic publisher emblems, highlighting the joint venture between these historic London publishing houses to bring this authoritative collection to market. This highly decorative volume is perfect for collectors of historical fiction, Edwardian-era books, pocket editions, Rexine bindings, and books with gilt top edges.
