This striking, polished Thunderegg specimen is a fantastic showcase piece for any mineral collection or lapidary display. Strongly indicative of a classic Cold Mountain thunderegg from the Sierra Madre Mountains of Chihuahua, Mexico, this authentic volcanic nodule has been expertly sliced and face-polished to a high glass shine. The flat face reveals a stunning, deep translucent smoky chalcedony core nested within a rich, earthy ochre-brown jasper matrix. Intricate brecciated fracturing borders the core, highlighting beautifully detailed white and grey agate banding on the interior pocket. Because Cold Mountain material is uniquely highly silicated, the outer jasper rind accepts the exact same mirror-polished finish as the crystalline center. The reverse side features the completely unpolished, raw, knobby volcanic rhyolite rind, offering a wonderful tactile and visual contrast to the polished front display.
