This exceptional late Meiji Period early 20th century Japanese Kutani porcelain figurine depicts Hotei, the revered Oriental god of abundance, good fortune, and happiness. Grounded in Zen Buddhist tradition, Hotei is inspired by a historical 10th-century monk revered as an incarnation of Maitreya (the Future Buddha), later becoming embraced in Japanese folklore as one of the beloved Seven Lucky Gods. Sourced from the historical kiln regions of Ishikawa Prefecture, the statue showcases masterful artistry through its use of the traditional moriage technique, featuring heavily layered, slip-trailed enamel work that lends a rich tactile depth to the intricate floral and geometric robes.
