This exquisite pair of vintage mid 20th century Japanese porcelain plaques is beautifully executed in the traditional Oriental artistic style of the renowned painter Saito Hodo. Produced during the Showa era, these captivating character studies celebrate classic Oriental themes of longevity, humility, and dedication to everyday labor. The left plaque portrays an elderly gentleman in detailed, traditional draped robes holding a staff, while the right plaque captures an elderly woman gracefully hunched over a sweeping broom. Originally conceived as delicate watercolor paintings on paper or silk during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, these iconic portraits were beautifully adapted by Showa period artisans onto fine porcelain plaques using crisp transfer outlines and hand-painted polychrome enamel detailing. Both plaques are elegantly showcased within stylized, textured mats and framed in dark wood borders, making this a culturally rich and visually striking set of mid-century Oriental decorative art.
