Up for sale is a Set of 3 Late 1940’s American Delta Line SS Del Norte Cast Brass Metal Ship Chief Engineer Signs in Different Languages! The English one measures 15 7/8” long. The Portuguese one measures 11 1/8” long. The Spanish one measures 12 1/8” long. The set is in excellent overall condition with minor signs of wear consistent with their age and use. This historic set of matching vintage cast-brass maritime cabin plaques was salvaged from the Delta Line (Mississippi Shipping Company) out of New Orleans, sourced directly from the estate of Chief Engineer David Burnham. Dating back to the late 1940’s, this cohesive multilingual set was custom-cast for the line's premier post-WWII South American flagship routes, which included the revolutionary luxury combination passenger-cargo liners like the SS Del Norte. The signs feature the head engineering title across three distinct languages to accommodate international crews and port officials: English ("CHIEF ENGINEER'S DAY ROOM"), Portuguese ("CHEFE DE MAQUINAS" for ports in Brazil), and Spanish ("JEFE DE MAQUINISTAS" for Argentina and Uruguay). The plaques were produced using custom shipyard-poured patterns—likely at the Ingalls Shipbuilding foundry in Mississippi—which explains the lack of commercial manufacturer marks on the reverse. This remains a highly documented, rare piece of New Orleans merchant marine and South American trade route history, directly tied to a prominent chief engineer from the golden era of American ocean liners.
