It measures 16 5/8” tall, 20 7/16” wide, and 9/16” deep on the outside of the wooden frame. The piece is in excellent overall condition with minor signs of wear consistent with its age and use. This one-of-a-kind piece stands as an exceptional artifact of Louisiana cultural and political history, bringing together two of the state’s most influential twentieth-century figures. Hand-drawn by legendary New Orleans cartoonist and historian John Churchill Chase (1905–1986), the original artwork features a direct presentation inscription to Louisiana Archbishop Philip M. Hannan. Created in September 1973 on behalf of The Clarion Herald and WDSU-TV, the mixed-media composition in ink, watercolor, and acrylic commemorates the historic launch of a $4.4 million senior housing initiative undertaken by the Archdiocese. Original presentation drawings by Chase are extraordinarily scarce on the secondary market, and this piece is elevated further by its direct provenance to Archbishop Hannan's personal collection and its vintage framing by Alonzo's Inc. on Joseph Street.
