This early 20th century antique folding souvenir postcard titled "Beautiful Florida" was produced by the renowned E.C. Kropp Co. of Milwaukee and features a unique die-cut orange fruit design complete with leaves, a canceled 1-cent postage stamp, and handwritten vintage script addressed to Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. When opened, it reveals an attached accordion-style strip containing sixteen vibrant color lithograph images showcasing Florida scenes, notably including two historically significant Black Americana novelty panels titled "Honey, come down, I am waiting for you in Florida" and "A Joy Ride in Florida." These striking cards form part of a dark and complex chapter in Southern souvenir history, reflecting the pervasive "alligator bait" trope popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries where publishers like E.C. Kropp produced exaggerated imagery capitalizing on the sensationalized perils of the Florida wilderness. Today, these historical artifacts offer a window into early American visual culture, making this an exceptional piece of ephemera for dedicated collectors of vintage Florida souvenirs, early postcards, and historical Black Americana.
