This vintage clay poker chip represents a pivotal moment in the mid-century underground gaming landscape of Jefferson Parish, Louisiana—an area famously tolerated as the "Free State of Jefferson" due to its wide-open, illicit gambling scene. Manufactured on the distinct "Hub Mold" (characterized by the concentric rectangular spokes around the rim), this specific design features striking green edge inserts, a premium manufacturing detail used to deter local counterfeiting on high-traffic tables. It was ordered by the O'Dwyer brothers right at the turn of the decade for their high-end, independent venue located at 100 Jefferson Highway, which opened in 1949. Because these open commercial table games were short-lived—abruptly halted by the federal crackdowns following the televised 1950–1951 Kefauver Committee crime hearings—surviving specimens with intact, clean inlays are highly prized by regional history buffs and specialized casino chip collectors.
