This extraordinary, museum-quality Vietnam War-era U.S. M1 steel combat helmet is an exceptionally rare and striking artifact of individualized military folk art, dating from the late 1960’s (circa 1967–1969) when the cultural saturation of the Space Race deeply influenced military culture. Transcending standard surplus, this one-of-a-kind piece serves as an intimate canvas of enlisted psychology, operational humor, and countercultural expression, bearing the hand-lettered identification "Ray Hodges / Doom 20." The exterior has been extensively customized using an early heavy-duty felt-tip marker alongside hand-applied white and reddish-brown paint, exhibiting a sophisticated, dual-zone thematic composition divided down the center by a stark vertical motif with alternating lateral forks representing the twisted barbs and defensive hazards of concertina wire. The one side features a naive multi-point hand-drawn star and a dynamic, space-age-inspired rocket ship complete with a trailing fire effect.
